There are two main lessons I always try to convey whenever I get a new class. The first is Never believe your teacher, and especially never believe your textbooks. It is not the same as saying they are always wrong, they are probably right most of the time in most cases. Maths is probably more often right than wrong, although even your teacher and your textbooks can, and do, make mistakes. History is probably more often wrong than right, especially when it is the government approved text here in Indonesia. Religion is, of course, almost always pure baloney. It is the only subject where different people have to be taught different things in the same class. Even apparently authoritative books like dictionaries can be wrong. I hold up my 1974 Concise Oxford Dictionary and point to the dust jacket which has, emblazoned across the corner, the words NEW EDITION. The second is, Cherish anger. Anger is important. You need anger to drive your lives. Anger is the opposite of submission - and it is not the same as violence and being wild and crazy. Never submit. If you have to submit, never submit 100%. Leave room for your anger to grow again. This is Greta Christina speaking at Skepticon 4** and putting into much better words than I ever could* the anger I am sure we all share and what anger itself is all about. ____________________________________ * Which is praise indeed! ** Are there any Scepticons for those on the eastern shores of the pond who prefer their letters less angular? youtu.be/GUI_ML1qkQE
