There are ups and downs in all rescue work, some great days, some - TopicsExpress

There are ups and downs in all rescue work, some great days, some sad days, times to say goodbye and times to welcome new. But once in a great while you get to experience a miracle. In this case, a Christmas miracle for me. He can be seen in the form of a big kitty, running around the house with his tail up, talking up a storm, eating his way through plate after plate of wet food, as often as he can get you to give it to him. His eyes are bright, he is playing, chases the laser, loves catnip toys and looks at Wanda and I as if we were Gods. I look at him as a true Christmas miracle. His story doesnt matter before C & W... lets just say it was pretty horrific. He had no real will and perceived all things to be potential danger including people. He just gave up. It was his fourth move and none of his former places he lived were good. Well, sadly, a few months ago, he developed fatty liver, stopped eating just long enough to have severe liver issues. He moved in with Wanda and I and a very long night and day ritual began. Me, syringe feeding him several times a day, Keisha and Liz giving him fluids, and giving him Denamarin pills as well. Now, if a cat is still eating or you can get enough into them, Denamarin will reverse fatty liver, but the odds are usually the cat is NOT eating plus the cat is throwing it all up so syringe feeding cant be done. In this case the cat was NOT eating and the good part was that he would throw up, but not every time you fed him-sometimes only once a day or every couple days. Then he started throwing up, so I went to syringe feeding a little part of a syringe every hour, many ties a day. He kept it down. We developed a bond. Somehow he did not look at me in horror every time I picked him up and started cooing nonsense about non noms good stuff come on try and eat your non nons in what was most likely bordering on baby talk. He took the syringe feeding well. Mind you this went on for two months at least. Just before Christmas he looked a little less yellow to me, and lo and behold he started to eat ON his own. Just a little. Kept up the syringe feeding for a few more days. And then he wanted OUT of his upstairs kennel in my office and he sat in the window and he looked actually interested in LIFE for the first time Id ever seen that in his eyes. Hes well. Hes whole again-psychologically and physically-and he is the happiest cat Ive ever seen. Follows us both all over the house, sits proudly on top of the futon surveying his now safe home and life. I thank God for my Christmas miracle-no names mentioned, but if you come visit you just might meet him. And, I have to admit, I gave up more than a few occasions during this whole time...when hed throw up Id think to myself, Its over... Then Id pick up again and wed try harder. What a great cat he is. What a wonderful present for Christmas this year. Carmens Christmas miracle. In all the years weve had the sanctuary, Ive only gotten TWO other cats back from Fatty Liver Disease and both of them continued to eat on their own throughout it. Never have I gotten a cat completely normal who did not eat for that long a period. Love that boy!!!!!
