9 October 2014 Brighton welcomes State Government announcement on planning reform BRIGHTON Mayor Tony Foster has welcomed the State Government’s announcement that it intends to introduce legislation to move towards a statewide planning scheme in the first half of next year. Mayor Foster said many Councils including Brighton had already initiated planning reforms to improve the development approval process, and the State Government’s intention to develop a consistent statewide planning system would enhance those advances. “Brighton Council has worked proactively throughout the development of its draft interim planning scheme to ensure consistency with other planning schemes, and sees the Government’s commitment as a logical and necessary next step in the planning reform process. “We all know that planning reform is important to encourage economic growth and development and to send the message that Tasmania is open for business. “Importantly, Councils like Brighton have had input for the Government’s consideration and once the legislation is enacted, efficiencies that we have already achieved can benefit the entire State,” Cr Foster said.
