There has been some discussion elsewhere on FB about the whole notion of political meetings being photographed and videoed and whether this goes against personal freedom, privacy, job security, state oppression surveillance society and fascist following. For these reasons there are calls , as at the Unity of the Left conference yesterday for no photographs. This I disagree with. In the light of these discussions it has emerged that there are people who dont want to be photographed or videoed for other reasons. IE self image. And this is something we really HAVE to address. Some people ( mostly women ) have poor body image. One woman says : I feel vulnerable on camera. I have spent too many years of my life being taunted for being overweight by society to be comfortable with projecting images of myself beyond groups of people I know I am safe with I totally agree with this .Recently I agreed to chair the Darcus Howe meeting and politically I made a contribution , but the only thing that tormented me was - can they cut me out of the video ! sat at the end away from the camera and hoped that I was out of shot ! We are a long way away from emancipation where it doesnt matter what society EXPECTS us to look like and we are comfortable enough to be - well comfortable in our own bodies ! Solidarity
