There is SO MUCH baggage surrounding the color pink. Ive raised B from infancy in a gender-neutral way, sure she had some pink onesies but she had plenty of other stuff. The very first time she saw a princess anything, she was hooked. Shed found her love, organically, without any help or influence from me (because seriously, I hate pink, never got into princess....unicorns were a whole other matter, however...). Her world is one of pink and purple and sparkles and ultra-femininity. And I encourage her in it. Because it is what SHE loves. The cultural baggage attached to femininity as inherently bad and less-than is not going anywhere anytime soon. But as a mother of a little girl, I am glad we can start to recognize it for what it is and talk about it. Because as a feminist (of a sort) I will cut you if you try to tell my daughter she cannot have what makes her happy. slate/blogs/xx_factor/2014/03/28/pink_and_princesses_why_does_girly_equal_lame.html
