There is a Maxine cartoon going around that just got my hackles up so, sorry folks, Im venting on FB. There is nothing funny about mental illness or suicide. There is nothing funny about poverty, lack of health care. There is nothing funny about the increasingly impassable chasm between the haves and the have nots... with the have-not category being populated more and more by the used-to-haves. There is nothing amusing about misquoting a past president with the intent to dismiss and marginalize those for whom the legislation ridiculed has been a life saver. There is nothing funny about perpetuating racial stereotypes... reifying images that are intentionally misleading, demeaning, oppressive, divisive, intended to dehumanize. There is nothing funny about the savage conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis. Ask the parents of the dead children. ALL of these issues are far more complex than may be fairly reduced to or represented in sound bites, bumper stickers or cartoons. All of these issues are not issues at their core at all... they are human beings. These are peoples real lives. I choose not to make fun at their expense.
