There is a conversation thread on Salem Talk that many of you may not be able to see. So, I want to share my comments in response to the comments being made about illegal immigrants. For the most part, the Hispanics residing in Salem are Guatemalan, not Mexican. They are hard-working, law-abiding, family-oriented people who keep to themselves. They provide I-9 documentation and pay taxes. Granted, they look different and many have limited English skills but that will change as their children enter school. I am the first person in my family to be born in America. We, too, were discriminated against. If you want a job at Freshmark, apply. They hire regularly. Be prepared for physical work in poor environmental conditions. And if youre not willing or able to do the job, prepare to be fired. Recent estimates made by demographers put Salems Hispanic population at over 1200 people. That is 10% of our population. The US Census Bureau projects that by 2043, no single ethnic group will have a majority. Thats means that whites will comprise less than 50% of the population. We can work together to build a diverse community or we can complain. Your choice.
