There is a railroad urban legend that the space between the rails was set by the width of two horses asses in Rome, the width of the chariot wheels in Rome. This fails sanity test when you realize that the rail gauges (the spacing) varies and before the War of Southern Rebellion there were many rail gauges in the US. It took the rebels to force the North to standardize and then re-gauge southern railroads when the took back from the rebels a portion of the south so the northern trains could run on them.
