There is a theme on Christian maturity that runs through the New Testament. The teaching suggests that we begin as infants spiritually and we grow and mature in Christ. Jesus said no student is above his teacher but those who are fully trained will be like him .The church uses teaching and discipleship to help implement this process of growth in the Lord Now in Proverbs there is a scripture that says train a child in the way he should go and in the end they wont depart from it. Considering the mass exodus from the church over the last several years ,what are we to conclude? I was a part of a large gathering that begin to reduce in numbers and what many saw as lack of commitment to the cause. Some thought as the proverb suggested that more training was needed. This meant stronger leadership more discipleship. Train the child! I remember feeling somewhat different at the time thinking it wasnt the training or the discipleship that was lacking but in the way he should go was the part that needed to be examined. In other words we had plenty of strong leaders and discipleship programs . What we needed was a different direction . I felt in many ways our discipleship and training was leading them away from Christ and maturity. Why wouldnt you want to depart from that?
