There is a very useful message in this post - perhaps more than one (depending on what you glean from it). Pay close attention to the second paragraph here (from MBC). I encounter this issue constantly and it MUST be addressed. I have spent years being a trainer, working in the fitness industry, and writing programs for a long list of different people, everybody from: a fresh faced teenager who has just joined the gym for the very first time, to the experienced athlete looking to change-up their routine, or to the retired man/woman trying to get back into shape. Regardless of the individual, the basics stay very true and will always be the basics. So if you get them right, then that is the first GREAT step taken. Everything else should follow - in time. One of the keys to a good and SUCCESSFUL program is a term i like to use; properly propagated. Which essentially just means that everything is evenly distributed; making sure that there is a solid balance of all the right things involved. There have been many times where i have written a program out in a specific way for a trainee and given them the timeframe for which to stick to the routine and they start adding things and taking things away here and there. Dont get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with experimenting with a program, but at least know WHY you are changing it. A program, if nothing else, should be two things: balanced and effective. If the balance is off, then the effectiveness may very well be too. I have a lot more to say, but i dont want to go on too long here, so we will delve into that tomorrow. Just remember: balance is the key. Happy training :)
