There is an inherent problem when a band splits up and then - TopicsExpress

There is an inherent problem when a band splits up and then reconvenes more than a decade later to release new material. Our minds naturally create a cut-off/starting point that is expected to be picked up upon when the new material is recorded. However, this natural tendency discounts the reality in that the individual artists have had another decade of new influences and progress on their instruments and with their songwriting. With this in mind, it brings me to the subject of the new Murder City Devils album. I was late to the boat on discovering this band, and only managed to see them once, at a house show, during their final US tour. After their split their albums never left rotation for me. And I have longed for a follow-up to In Name in Blood this entire time. Well, the band finally delivered. But it wasnt the follow-up to In Name in Blood that we all received. It was a follow-up to the Thelma EP, by way of a ten year gap, that they delivered. I really want to like this record. And there are songs that I really do love. But the past decade or so has done something. This isnt Murder City Devils. Sure, the band members are all there. But the long break, with all of its life experience, new influence, etc., has created an entirely different band. And, frankly, I am not sure if this new band is one that I care all that much for. This song is as close to the old band that this album comes... https://youtube/watch?v=h5u6Ow-0nb4
