There is an uncompromising power rivalry between Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia; thats a fact everybody acknowledges. The rivalry between AL and BNP does not stop with Hasina and Khaleda. The rivalry is between two sets of people, roughly comprising 40% of the population, who are the direct and indirect beneficiaries of politics. These are the parasites who, by aligning and identifying themselves as party activists, reap the rewards when this or that party is in power. Were politics to be abandoned at the least 50% of these parasites would lose their income totally and the rest 50% would see their incomes severely reduced. The ultimate aim of a political party in any democratic country is to secure the maximum votes come election. To achieve populism any party must necessarily resort to party patronage which breeds parasites ans leads to blatant corruption. With a population density of 1,237.51 persons per square kilometer, Bangladesh is the runaway leader; excluding city states like Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, Monaco, Bahrain, etc.. Then there are a few countries in the 200 to 400 region. Most other countries have population density of less than 200 persons per square kilometer. Bangladesh has no resources to speak of, an ever growing population, decreasing and depletion of agricultural land barely enough to stave off starvation, Bangladesh is in a dangerously high risk level; one bad harvest and the sufferings that we have witnessed in African countries in times of drought would pale. Every now and then we are informed by politicians and by the media that Bangladesh is doing very well in eliminating poverty. We are informed that Bangladeshi expatriates have remitted 19 billion dollars this year or that year (this is only the money remitted into the country thorough official channels; I estimate the amount could be as high as 30 billion dollars). Then we boast of a vibrant garment industry which exported 14 billion dollars or so, this or that year, (the import content of the exported finished garment is never mentioned). Yes, the financial health of Bangladesh is good; we each nods our heads and think of it no more. These two sources of income from millions of people toiling in sweat shops or slaving overseas; we all again nod our heads and do not think of it anymore. With no industry to speak of and technology taking a back seat there is very little to look forward to. And this coming elections? Every person, from the rickshaw puller to the top intelligentsia has an opinion. Instead of leaving it into the hands of AL and its allies and BNP and its allies why cant the 160 million Bangladeshis, on whose behalf the constitution is written, tell these two adversaries to follow the legal procedure as is written in the constitution to the letter. The people of Bangladesh has not given either of these two parties to deviate from the provisions of the court.
