There is an unfortunate and damaging stereotype about women that they are not as good in math as men. This year’s Fields Medal – considered “Math’s Nobel Prize,” the highest award in math – was won for the first time by a woman. I have read the article: “Solve this math problem: The gender gap” by Francis Su when I heard this news. This is great news, I was happy for her, Maryam Mirzakhani, that’s a girl everywhere thinking about math. I think she is a really intelligent woman when she is the first woman won the highest award in math. Otherwise, this news was great and excellent for world mathematician, in particular for Iranian Mathematician. Maryam Mirzakhani became the first woman in 78 years to be awarded the prestigious Fields Medal, considered the highest honor in mathematics. Mirzakhanis selection does exactly nothing to convince me that women are capable of doing mathematical research at the same level as men. Mirzakhanis accomplishment is all the more groundbreaking in light of the well-documented disadvantages and biases women face in math and science. Math is commonly known as the man’s major. Many college math professors are men and the same goes for their students. There might be more men in the field of mathematics however the women that have made contributions need to be seen as equals. In my opinion, it instead is that we all as a society, men and women alike, are becoming better at encouraging and nurturing mathematical talent in women, and more capable of recognizing excellence in womens work. In Conclusion, women have made major contributions to the field of mathematics. Their formulas might not be the most famous and widely used however Maryam Mirzakhani paved a way for many women today in the field of mathematics. Despite the low numbers of women in the math world, the women that do succeed make an impact that will not be forgotten.
