There is renewed urgency for support of physician investigators, according to a report presented by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Physician Scientist Workforce Working Group to the NIH Director’s Advisory Committee last Friday. The report cites the stagnation and aging of the current physician investigator pool, an adverse environment for new clinical investigators and trainees, and disproportionally low growth in African-American and Native American physician scientists as central factors. The working group called specifically for development of new data sources and tools to track training outcomes and career choices. Limitations with current data make it especially difficult to identify better ways to integrate research around clinical training.
