There is some misconception that the rescue fanatics on this page think you HAVE to rescue your dog and that you are BAD if you buy from a reputable breeder~~this is not true far from it in fact some of my best friends are breeders and excellent ones at that~~they key is that many do not want to learn what makes an reputable breeder~~well in fact there is alot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes you might not know about like genetic testing etc but here are a few things in laymans terms that might help you. 1. A contract, if the breeder does not have you fill out a contract, and or it does not include that if for any reason you cannot keep the dog it must be returned to them, or if there is no provision for you either spaying the dog or showing the dog (in other words forbidding you to have puppies) then they are not a reputable breeder. Now before you get excited with well no one is ever allow to breed dogs again and we will run out of dogs and blablabla... if someone is really interested in the breed, really interested in continuing the breed with excellent standards, they can find a breeder mentor who will help them thru this process~~its not a closed club they just dont want their dogs going to puppy mills. 2. If your breeder sells bassets online on a facebook page or next day pets or similar they are not a good breeder. A good breeder will likely have a web site (many dont) but do not advertise their pups for sale. 3. If your breeder says they ship anywhere they are not a good breeder, dont mistake this to say a reputable breeder will never ever ship a dog cause sometimes they will, but it is after they decide that while it is a ways away you are the best home, and usually the buyer is on the same plane. 4. If your breeder lets you have the dog before 10 weeks it is not a good breeder, regardless of any nonsense that you want the dog to bond with you, or that once they are weaned its find that is not true , they learn most their manners with there pack between 8-12 weeks. The longer the pup stays with its birth family the better for the pup in the end. Its really pretty simple, I dont know why on this page its so hard, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck its probably a duck~~so dont call it a chicken there is nothing wrong with being a duck. Its about learning, I doubt there is one rescue fanatic that hasnt bought at least one dog for a less than stellar breeder~~I know I did Beautiful WIlma the sweetest thing there ever was~~died 10 days later from Parvo~but why not learn, why not be open to getting your next dog at a better place, so they have better chances, why insist on so much anger and resentment, why not be open to learn you might be surprised~because while I do see on this page many of us fanatics seem to go on and on about the same thing its cause no one ever listens~~every blatant fight is started with post like the one earlier here today which the facts just are not true its out of the blue..no one said anything about his dog and just wanted to cause trouble.. I love seeing yours dogs~~perfect or not~~good breeder or not~~what I cannot just let go by without commenting is the everyone has a right to breed their dog comments, and crap like that cause no they dont. And dont say you saved the dog at the pet store, you may have technically saved her but your freed a spot for her little sister and guaranteed her mother and father another year of hell..these are facts..we didnt make them up~~enjoy your dogs, bassets are a fun breed, but learn from people who have been here longer than you, be open to that you might be misinformed, you might be surprised at what will transpire if you do..I have friends all over the world, who I meet often, have loved some great dogs, some for not long enough, and I know feel pretty comfortable that I have the knowledge that I learned from someone picking on me all those year ago to make the right choices. Here is Wilma ~~never forgotten even 26 years later
