There is something very meaningful and courageous happening because of another public display of a horrible domestic violence incident. Victims are talking about it, openly on social media. Common questions people ask immediately when they hear a person lived with an abusive partner are Why didnt they just leave?, Werent there signs of this behavior early on?, How could they let this happen to them? Theres a stigma behind domestic violence which inadvertently blames the victim. Gooden, the woman in this article, is right - these kinds of questions and conversations create silence among victims. As more people speak up and shed light on the many many layers behind these relationships and how they occur, how many different forms of abuse there are - you dont have to get knocked out to be a victim of DV - it doesnt just happen among the poor or uneducated - Victims of abuse may not feel so ashamed, alone, judged, afraid. Maybe more abusers will seek help and actually do the work it needs to take to make behavioral changes and break the cycle. I havent put this out there to everyone and honestly havent wanted to... but I need to practice what I believe and speak up: If I showed him how committed I was and how much I loved him, he would change. Because I didnt think it was that bad (denial). What would my family and friends think of me? Because I loved him and I thought I would be the only person that could help him. #WhyIStayed mic/articles/98326/19-why-istayed-tweets-that-everyone-needs-to-see
