There may be some very annoying things about facebook, but one of the best things about this social media outlet is that its a great networking tool. So, with that said, I am using it for that purpose in this post. This is for local White Co folks.........as you know, Family Promise of White County is a non-profit organization that supports homeless families with children as they work toward accomplishing goals that will result in getting a job, a place to live, thus sustained independence. There are many people in our community who support FP through volunteering, financial donations, family needs donations and such. There are 10-15 WC church congregations that support by hosting the families in their churches, or by helping other churches when they host. That very fine-tuned system works like clockwork week after week, and has been doing so for 15 months now. I applaud ALL (hundreds) who make that system work!! There is one component of FP that depends on volunteers and is in need of more manpower (or womanpower......maybe we can say peoplepower). It is the day center, which is where the families are when not at the churches (during the day and on weekends). Of course, some in the program will be at work or at school during daytime. The number of people at the center will be different from day to day. The center also is the location of the directors office M-F. There are people not affiliated with a host church who have asked how they can help Family Promise. Volunteering at the day center is one way those people can help. It does not require anything other than being there (well.... and your kindness and warmth). If you, or someone you know, would be interested in donating a few hours of time when needed, please respond to me in a private message with a phone # we can keep on record to share with host church coordinators. The needs would most likely be on Saturdays or Sundays (NOT every weekend!) . When I recruit people to volunteer on weekends, I only ask for 2 or 4 hours on either a Sat or a Sun......rarely would I ask for an entire day. The coordinators would reach out only when they cannot man the day center from their church volunteers. Sometimes there are gaps of only a few hours. Sometimes volunteers are needed on holidays. For example, Labor Day is coming up, and volunteers are needed there 9-5 until the families return back to the church for dinner and overnight stay. Please let me know ASAP if you would like to be at the day center for a few hours on Labor Day. You could be there 9-1 or 1-5. Or you get get a friend or relative to split it with you and each do 2 hrs. There will be several kids there (ages 4-7), and parents with kids that age could take your family to play with the kids. There is a playground there. This kind of community volunteer service is a great opportunity for high school seniors and college students who need volunteer hours for scholarships and/or college applications. I promise you this.......volunteering with an organization that supports the homeless is an awesome addition to an application. So, digest the info above, think about it, search your heart and let me know if you are willing to be put on a list to serve occasionally. And SORRY, I just couldnt explain all of this in one short paragraph. It was too important to condense.
