I find it extremely troubling to read the hateful comments made here though. People who obviously do not understand the issue make incredibly self-righteous and racist statements. As I see it, many on both sides are doing wrong. Zionist occupation of Palestinian territory is totally unacceptable, as is treating the Palestinians as second class citizens in their own land. On the other hand, the first map in this diagram is from 1948, and history obviously goes back much further than that. The Jews do have what many see as a valid claim to the land. There are 22 Arab nations and only one Jewish nation. The 1947 UN resolution, for better or for worse, divided up the land between Israel and Palestine in as fair a way as it thought reasonably possible. Since then, the Israelis have had to defend themselves against a number of attacks brought about with the sole aim of destroying their state and people. Israel has shown willingness to offer land for peace (excluding extremist Zionists who build on land that is not theirs), but the mission of the Arab states was to destroy Israel. And this was not fringe extremism, this was the leaders of Arab countries and the official policy of the Arab League. Who has a more valid claim to the land is obviously a very subjective question, but more to the point, if peace is going to happen, both sides need to compromise. On the Palestinian side this compromise is as simple as acknowledging the right of Israel to exist; something which they seem completely unprepared to consider.
