There seems to be a growing support for diplomatic disengagement, - TopicsExpress

There seems to be a growing support for diplomatic disengagement, if not outright isolationism, among Americans. I believe its driven in part by the rise of libertarianism and the fall of neo-conservatism. And as much as I welcome the decline of neo-conservatism, Im fairly certain that political isolation will be just as damaging. My understanding of libertarian views on foreign policy (correct me if Im wrong) is that free trade should reign supreme, and governments should butt out. Now dont get me wrong, the libertarian advocacy of free trade is laudable. But just because free trade is economically the best policy, doesnt mean we have to guarantee it to every kleptocracy and dictatorship. We should choose our friends wisely. There are horrific regimes like North Korea and Syria that warrant different treatment than nations who respect human rights. And thats where diplomacy comes into play. Russia just invaded Ukraine. Should it still be business as usual between America and Russia? Or should we leverage our economic strength to pressure a state headed back toward dictatorship to reconsider its actions? The United States needs sound foreign policy, not less foreign policy. We need more Eisenhower and less Clinton diplomacy. President Obama has a chance to apply the lessons of his diplomatic successes and failures to the Russian situation. And Im actually optimistic that hell get this right (maybe hopeful is the better word). Lets pray that he can channel Kennedy in his dealings with Russia.
