There was a pretty awesome moment [at the People’s Choice Awards] during Viola Davis’ acceptance speech for Favorite Actress in a New TV Series for How to Get Away With Murder...In the middle of the usual award show thanks, Viola made a little reference to a certain New York Times article about HTGAWM from last year that received a lot of criticism. Here’s what Viola said: Thank you Shonda Rimes, Betsy Beers, and Peter Nowalk for thinking of a leading lady who looks like my classic beauty...It’s not the first time Viola has responded to the comment. In September she told The View, in part: I’ve heard that statement [less classically beautiful] my entire life. Being a dark-skinned black woman, you heard it from the womb. And ‘classically not beautiful’ is a fancy term for saying ugly. And denouncing you. And erasing you. Now…it worked when I was younger. It no longer works for me now. It’s about teaching a culture how to treat you. Because at the end of the day, you define you. - Crushable Whats your response?
