There was a time when we lived in Victorville, Ca...a loooong time ago. I worked for the daily newspaper, so we were in the thick of what was going.on. James Rockford and the Rockford files came to town to shoot an episode; in our Wild West town. Wasnt so wild, but it was an old town not updated. For days we watched as they they set up in different places in town including replacing a storefront window with sugar glass so Garner could be thrown through it. That finished and they went out to Soggy Dry Lake (I couldnt make that up but it was neither soggy nor a lake, just a vast wasteland of sand, rather like the rest of the area) We sent out our young, intrepid reporter/photographer. She went out but didnt come back the next morning for work. Her mother called and said she had been out all night and she was worried! We assumed that Kris- who was young , (eighteen or nineteen) very attractive- met up with mr. Garner and well...... Nope. Shame on our dirty minds. They sent out the sheriffs horse patrol; they found her car and somewhat later found Kris lost in the desert overnight. She was not a happy camper, never got any shots of the action and was alone in the desert; she was sure she would die out there. Whenever I think about James Garner, I think of Victorville and Soggy Dry Lake.
