There was some questions when the 509th Officially receive the Maroon Beret. The key to the answer is officially. Prior to this some of us like myself war the beret with my 8th infantry patch anticipating its approval. The official date was February 1974. In the early days we just wore our Airborne wings with the oval on our beret. This is how I can denote the early 70 Troopers that I might have been stationed with. A few photographs I pulled from the history of the 509th.
