There were four games scheduled in the NBA calendar today, but the basketball world’s eyes were in Chicago for College Basketball’s Champions Classic. The yearly event features four of basketball’s premier programs but what makes this year’s edition the biggest is the first meeting on the big stage between the two most hype talents to ever come out of high school – Kansas’ Andrew Wiggins and Duke’s Jabari Parker. While it’s easy to get excited about upcoming prospects and there’s the danger of crowning them before they even prove themselves, but I’m jumping on the bandwagon because I’m high on these guys and their story is interesting. Jabari Parker was crowned by CNNSI as “the best high school player since Lebron James” in their May 2012 cover. He was the consensus #1 prospect for 2013. His game is as polished as any high junior that you will see. Many compare him to Melo because of their size and natural scoring ability. He continued to impress in his senior year which should only validate the title given to him but one thing happened. Another super prospect came out of nowhere to claim the title #1 high school player in America for 2013. Andrew Wiggins, the popular choice as the #1 pick in next year’s draft, was originally considered as the #1 prospect of the 2014, but reclassified and joined the 2013 batch. He was quickly placed over Parker. The former Huntington Prep star is an ultra- talented wing that has higher potential which could be the reason for his ranking. Think of Kevin Durant when KD was in Texas as both are smooth, athletic and can score. They met for the first time today and both showed why the hype is high. GM’s of Phila, Phoenix, Orlando, Boston, Utah, Sacramento are smiling with that they just saw in the United Center. We’ll have to wait for a year for them to don the NBA logo, but for now we can enjoy watching them grow in the college game.
