There were some very smart, articulate people on the podium at the AIPAC Policy Conference this morning. As I said earlier, Israel has no better spokesman than Michael Oren. Dennis Ross and Elliot Abrams may come from different sides of the political spectrum, but their encyclopedic knowledge of the Middle East, and of U.S. policy related to it, is unassailable. Congresswoman Marcia Fudge is a passionate, inspiring defender of the Jewish state. But for me it was Dan Webb, speaking before Congresswoman Fudge’s appearance, who made the greatest impression. In 2010, he was on a hunting trip in his home state of Pennsylvania when he fell out of a tree onto his back and was paralyzed. Today, he can stand and walk thanks to an exoskeleton system called ReWalk, which was developed by an Israeli, Dr. Amit Goffer. “I’ve always been a pretty determined guy,” Mr. Webb said after taking the stage. “My determination was matched by a man in Israel who invented this incredible tool.” It was hard not to be moved as Dr. Goffer, himself a quadriplegic, took the stage to accept Mr. Webb’s thanks and to tell the crowd, “I want to thank you for helping my country, my home, to stay safe and strong.” It’s one of those moments that give you perspective. Yes, Israel is engaged in an ongoing conflict with the Arab world, and no easy solution is at hand; the experts who took the podium this morning would agree with that. This Israel — the land of conflict and political controversy — is the Israel we hear about in the news every day. But surely the story of Israel is not complete without the story of Dan Webb, a man who felt so moved by the positive change Israeli technology has made in his life that he came to AIPAC to say thanks. This Israel — the country of creation and innovation, committed to making the world a better place even as its neighbors seem intent on destroying it — is the Israel I’d like to hear about more often. It’s a story we need to tell. There are more Dan Webbs out there.
