Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned – olivetree/b1/Rom.5.12.NIV1984 The apostle Paul teaches in Romans 5:12 that death entered the world through sin. This is a problem for those who are looking for ways to conciliate the conclusions of modern science with the revealed Word of God by positing that God might have used the process of evolution to create the world and its creatures. An evolutionary creation process would need many generations of creatures to die over millions of years in order to develop into the diversity of animals described as existing at the time of Adam and Eve. This means there would have to be death BEFORE the fall. Proponents of evolutionary creation dismiss Romans 5:12 by saying that it applies to human death, not animal death. There are many problems with this. To list two: first of all, it should be made clear that on this view Adams and Eves parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and grandparents (who by virtue of the exceedingly small incremental character of evolution would be virtually indistinguishable from them) were animals, and therefore it was not a problem that they died. Adams experience then would be one of being surrounded by death. One wonders what possible meaning could remain to the solemn warning, On the day that you eat of it, you shall surely die if for Adam death was simply a normal part of life (for his animal relatives). Secondly, while proponents of this view calmly affirm that it was completely natural before the Fall for foxes to eat rabbits, the Lord tells us otherwise. God reveals in unmistakably clear terms that animals before the Fall were given green plants to eat. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground–everything that has the breath of life in it–I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. (Gen 1:30). To affirm that animal death was part of Gods very good Creation, since they naturally ate each other, is a stunning denial of the most clear teaching of Gods Holy Word. It is a sad example of a failed attempt to shoehorn the Biblical revelation to fit into the mold of modern evolutionary science.
