Theres a book entitled: How Wall Street Created a Nation: J.P. Morgan, Teddy Roosevelt and the Panama Canal. Ferdinand De Lesseps developed the Suez Canal which was completed in 1869. He also attempted to build the Panama Canal however it was fraught with financial problems and the epidemic of malaria. He did not succeed. Later the U.S. completed the project under the leadership of Pres. Teddy Roosevelt in 1914. In the book you can read about the Suez Canal, who financed it, as well as the Panama Canal.
