Theres a homeless man in town I see from time to time hanging out at the coffee shop. Hes always chatting up people and bumming cigarettes from them. Every once in a while Ill buy him a cup of coffee and try to help him sober up a little. Then Ill engage him in something a little more substantial than small talk, and extract from his slurred speech tidbits about his life. Were friendly but I wouldnt say were friends, and as many times as hes tried to tell me, I still dont even know his name. In fact when I see him walking down the street, I call out to him as I pass him on my bike, hey boss. Unfortunately this term of familiarity has confused my three year old daughter because now whenever she sees the man staggering down the street she says, Look daddy, theres your boss!
