Theres a new hot category on YouTube: footage from dash-mounted cameras in Russia. Most of the videos are of car accidents filmed from the dashboard cams, which can be quite violent and disturbing. But its not a coincidence so many of these accidents are caught on camera: an estimated one million Russian motorists have dash cams installed. The reason, as you probably guessed, is corruption. Law enforcers are notoriously brutal, and make much of their income from bribes. This provides a perfect opening for organized crime to make millions of dollars off of insurance scams by staging crashes, or suckering innocent drivers into accidents. Every time Russian drivers get behind the wheel, they have to be aware of pedestrians trying to get hit on purpose for a payoff, or other drivers trying to hit them. So a majority of Russian motorists eschew insurance, and get a dash cam instead. Thats how, in 2012, over a dozen dash cams in Chelyabinsk captured never-before-seen images of a massive meteor crashing to earth. See, there really is a bright--meteoric actually--side to every situation! Click below to see the footage.Theres a new hot category on YouTube: footage from dash-mounted cameras in Russia.
