Theres a phenomenon in psychology called a misconstrual, whereby people think about distant events abstractly and ideally, whereas they think more concretely and realistically about events right in front of them. It is tempting to avoid current discomfort in the face of unclear future possibilities. I fear that people are doing this-- the there could be a cheaper / more efficient way argument is abstract and perhaps appealing for some. But from what I have heard from the people working on this project for the past two years, losing this opportunity means that we will pay more in the future to achieve fewer improvements in the long run. That, in my mind, would be a mistake.
