Theres a tree right outside my apartment, almost within reach... has been there since I moved in 9 years ago. Sitting right next to that tree is a power pole with a mess of wires and breakers attached to it; wires running right through the branches of the tree to the next pole some meters away. Each pole and tree combination shows the same approach along the road. I looked at that tree and felt a sense of pity that it was seemingly shackled, entwined in a situation it wasnt meant for and then I realised the tree was there long before the power pole was and that it also wasnt trimmed off or cut in any way so as to restrict its growth. The seasons have come and they have gone over the years, the leaves have sprouted in Spring and fallen in Winter just as they ever did and yet that tree continues to grow. The pole remains the same. Soon the tree will be bigger than that pole but thats not what is significant. What struck me about it as I stood there, was that Japan understands its connection to nature on a special level and rather than cull what is unnecessary to cull, they find a way to weave through it so that what was there in nature before can remain in the future. I suppose the same can be said for the people of Japan. And perhaps those that visit for a short while or stay for a lifetime.
