Because: Credit Suisse has admitted guilt to one criminal charge of aiding and abetting tax evasion, the first time the US has extracted a guilty plea from a major bank in two decades. The Swiss bank was hit with $US2.6 billion ($2.81 billion) in fines in the years-long probe into banks making a business out of helping their clients evade US taxes. United States Deputy Attorney General James Cole has confirmed the department’s investigation into the use of illegal offshore bank accounts at Credit Suisse had resulted in a “historic guilty plea” by the bank and the largest monetary penalty of any criminal tax case ever.
