Theres something Id like to know. Ive seen so many times where this link seemed to be my life as a geek: https://youtube/watch?v=3Ub3vliRRXI But before I knew it, this geek “curse” became my cure, or at least a prescription. Though I’ve always been a voracious, passionate reader, what really began my path to acceptance, hell recognition, was Robert Jordans Wheel of Time series. Without it . . . . I would have loved to have met him and still regret not having done so. Used to talk with his nephew on his casting page and he’s pretty cool but there was only Mr. Rigney. Because he was a Southern writer, there was so much of my world in his prose, with family and friends, a voice I recognized and loved. In the beginning and for quite a long time, I read right through being called a nerd and big, to jokes about what new “dictionary/thesaurus” was I reading now or “why was I always talking about books,” to the point of alienating others. But whenever I dealt with deep loss and pain, I always had a “world” and later because of it, amazing people who shared my interests. Because of him the love just branched out from there. Banks, Butcher, Carey and Martin, just to name a few. Most importantly, Butler. Her voice, possibly the most singular writers I’ve ever read. Her Wild Seed makes me wish it had been her not Marvel to introduce to world to mutants, no matter how important Lee’s social commentary to the world we live in. Not to mention, with all the things I’ve ever read/watched about vampires, I’ve never seen a take on the lore, remotely similar to her perspective. So, since I’m trying the group one more time, why not “jump in, feet first? I came here because I wanted to find a space that allowed me to enjoy my interest with people who I felt knew what it was like to be in a similar skin I’m in. I’d like to know about you. Ive seen posts about people dealing with ridicule and anguish from their interests but I’d love to hear how it helped instead. Who are your inspirations? What author, artist or show creator would you love to meet or have met? Why does speculative fiction resonate with you so much? On the flip side, do you feel this is counterproductive escapism without real progress? Why or why not?
