Theres something really off here for me that I cant quite articulate. Watching one after another of this type of article go by is not sitting right. The open flaunting of privilege and total disregard for the people whose basic needs like food, shelter, access to social services and education for their kids get annihilated by the gentrification process feels unbearable. Not to mention the way he talks about the crack epidemic is totally insane. Anyone coming across any discussions that frame this kind of article in the context of settler/colonialism and white supremacy? As an artist with a social conscience, thats a discussion Id much rather be having than the endless search for the next cool place, or the endless lamenting of this or that cool place closing down. This talk of this or that place being over and this or that place being next is feels like some miner 49er covered wagon manifest destiny Christopher Columbus strip mining bullshit. Or maybe the cultural equivalent of fracking. Real estate companies are for sure pushing this agenda. Theyve developed much of New York City and Im sure are eager to develop LA, Detroit, Leipzig, wherever else using the same tactic of creating a cool factor based around young artists. This is an idea in progress but like I said its the discussion Id rather be having. If anyone knows of any authentic discussion on this topic please point me there. What about as artists relatively new to the neighborhoods we live and work in we start creating solidarity movements in our communities with the people who have been living there longer than we have rather than looking for the next cool place to move? If the ability to make work is a basic need (which I think it is based on my experience as an artist) then I think we have much in common with those around us who are also struggling to survive on even more basic levels, but may not have the luxury of choosing where they go based on quality of life. theguardian/commentisfree/2014/feb/03/leave-new-york-for-los-angeles
