Theres something you dont see everyday, Chauncey. We feed two - TopicsExpress

Theres something you dont see everyday, Chauncey. We feed two feral cats on the front porch every day and theyre always there to get their offerings. Theyre pretty good about eating their bowls clean of food but, occasionally, theres a little bit left when they walk away. Ive always thought they come back later to finish it off (thats what the indoor cats do with their half-eaten meals). Last night, I came walking in from the car and as I stepped onto the porch I saw, sticking out of the garden, a ringed tail. The feral cats are both black. Before I reached a point I could see that part of the garden, whoever owned that tail had fled. I went inside, walked into the living room, and looked out the window. There was a raccoon -- a raccoon! -- sitting next to the bowl eating the leftover dry cat food. For some of you, sighting animals more exotic than cats and dogs and hummingbirds is an everyday occurrence. You live in or near the hills or a forest or out in the middle of almost-nowhere. Im in the middle of Los Angels. Not near the hills. Not near a forest. Hell, the nearest park is a couple miles away. Ive lived in this house for over 20 years and have never seen a raccoon around here. (And there have been feral cats and food bowls on the porch pretty much the whole of that time.) Perhaps more surprising, one of the feral cats was in the yard as well, though not on the porch or near the food bowl. He was acting completely normally.
