Theres this timid and hardworking man just next to my office who makes a honest living by serving decent food at rather reasonable rates. The options are few- chowmein, parathas, alur dum, egg and chicken curry and fried rice. So far so good. But maybe because he had irked some god in his previous life, he is blessed with a wife who can be heard even half a mile away. She is not there all the time, but when she appears, she makes it a point to abuse ( her vocabulary is quite colorful) and belittle her husband in front of the customers in every possible way- for taking more time, being clumsy with accepting payments and not being strict to customers when they offer a 100 rupee note and want change. In her worst moods, as today, she pushes him away with a nasty shove and takes on the cooking bit herself with cries of learn how this is done in a tone that would instill fears even in the heart of a person at a concentration camp. But the man merely apologizes, and accepts his plight, the thin smile that appears on his lips is perhaps his way of looking at the shit he is in and trying to laugh it away. Or maybe this is a part of their marital role-pay, which keeps them going. I wouldnt know. But spare a thought for him. Please.
