There’s so much writing online right now about the mechanical functions of Love and Hate in regards to what we each feel about the death of the Hate Preacher Phelps, as if one somehow erases the other. The concepts of Love and Hate are not mutually exclusive. They exist in a perfect, beautiful complimentary balance. It’s less like choosing which song you’re going to listen to, and more like adjusting how much bass or treble you choose to listen WITH. If you turn the treble all the way up, the previous amount of bass is still there. It’s just less noticeable. Would it sooth your mind to say “I LOVE that he’s gone. I LOVE that his tenure of establishing the low end of a spectrum has been completed.” Even Gandhi recognized that crop pests must be destroyed. If something is threatening your potential to thrive, you eliminate it. That’s the survival game. This didn’t mean he gleefully eradicated the lives of any species that threatened his food source like a malicious child burning ants with a magnifying glass. It simply means he understood the opportunity cost of facing your needs versus pretending you’re ethics arent negotiable. And now Im gonna make some balloon cocks for tomorrow.
