These Confession Misconceptions are by Manfred Koehler who serves with New Tribes Mission in Mexico. They appeared in Discipleship Journal. I encourage you to continue to reflect, confess, and seek God for spiritual cleansing and growth. Confession Misconceptions As I’ve reflected on how God has freed me in recent years, I’ve realized that confession isn’t what I used to believe it was. Here are the misconceptions about confession I’ve identified. Confession does not regain God’s favor. The anchor of my faith is God’s unconditional love (Romans 8:38-39). In Christ, I am complete and fully accepted in God’s sight. I don’t have to cower in confession. Instead, I can boldly claim His forgiveness, free from the fear of God’s frown (Hebrews 4:14-16). Confession is not a promise never to sin again. This misconception no longer crosses my mind. Or does it? Wasn’t it just this morning that I shook my head in frustration, disappointed in myself for falling into the same sin again? (Confessing once again, I resolved to do better – and in doing so, I trusted myself, not God. But self can do nothing more than break its promise.) Confession, no matter how sincere, cannot eradicate the sinful nature (Romans 7:14-25).
