These are sometimes called Stone Jonnies or Stone Boys. They were built by Basque Sheepherders in the early 1900s when sheep were the dominant grazer on the range. The Basque name for them is Harri Mutilak which roughly translates to Stone Boy. They were erected as a sort of survey marker to keep the big bands of sheep separate. They are usually located on a high place that can be seen for miles. In the Hualapai Valley near Iveson Ranch there is quite a concentration. I have never seen so many in one area. They are flat rocks stacked to about the height that a man could heft them. They are well built having stood the testament of time. One more story tomorrow from this area then Im done. Pretty amazing what I can find just driving around eh?
