These guys were only together 9 months at this time ! ? They were already so popular on American radio that they were flown to Hefners Mansion for his late night hit network talk / entertainment show ! Who ever said that Deep Purple was a mediocre short lived band as far as international success ? This was before they even had their virtuoso vocalist Ian Gillan and songs like Smoke On The Water were even written as they composed on the road while touring mostly in those days . The whole Hefner thing is weird , but these guys must have really loved this unorthodox venue and the honor of being hand picked over bands like Led Zeppelin ,The Kinks or The Beatles even ( the Beatles did not perform large venues , but recorded live with audiences of people who were not aware the band they came to see would be the Fab Four so this was quite possible as by the time people were aware of the band having been there they would be at least hundreds of miles away ) Yes , this show was live , but some bands with security concerns would record earlier in the day with the same audience and it would be aired in between segments or at the end of the broadcast :) https://youtube/watch?v=KiXcqxms3Bs
