These sorts of articles infuriate me. I dont know if its the newspapers slant or the RSPCAs (although I assume that the origin of the story was from the RSPCA). The point of the story is that people dont easily surrender their pets, that the reasons tend to be personal or financial difficulties and that the RSPCA has programs which can help people retain their animals. So why lead with yet another shock, horror headline which suggests that once again irresponsible people are dumping their animals? How come the lead isnt something like, we can help you keep your pet, ask us how? The reason is because the RSPCA and like organisations have spent so long railing against the public that theyve trained everyone in their version of events. Reporters will automatically assume that anything to do with dogs in shelters is all about the evil public, and the RSPCA has long ago forgotten how to present a positive spin on events. The narrative of irresponsibility is so deeply engrained through years of use that whatever the real story, its reported as yet another dumped dogs story. dailytelegraph.au/news/nsw/dumped-dog-numbers-grow-as-rspca-reveals-reasons-for-pet-abandonment-include-financial-difficulties-moving-house-and-time/story-fni0cx12-1227050942539
