They were card-carrying anarchists, a a young loving couple. They rented the downstairs and classier half of the old house on the edge of campus where I had an upstairs space. I wasnt sure how anarchists would be as neighbors--just looking out for themselves,I wondered? But they were fine. I think they actually had a little money, dressed hippy-up-scale and owned a fairly decent car. Itd be fun to hear how their politics have worn since those days (early 70s). Anyway, thinking the worst ( our id ignorance) I kept my distance and that wasnt too hard since we had separate entrances. ..Upstairs was rented to four separate tenants--a would be writer/hiker/adventurer/philosopher who baked small loaves for sale, using our filthy communal kitchen. He was always interesting, though he talked and talked if you let him. He loved martial arts and also a beautiful dancer; together they took out the electricity from his room, for the Zen of it all, refinished/removed paint from all the wood trim, and installed a wall of mirrors. The room was empty of furniture and the futon came out the closet at night. It was a beautiful space. My room next door was bigger, with a wall of windows, and I painted it lemon pie. The other tenant was a loner, worked nights at a topless bar on the edge of town. Men would follow her home so she kept a St. Bernard with her. We were plagued by dog hair in the bathroom at all times and also by the incessant repeats of a favorite record which she like to play at all three speeds. In the attic lived a very young girl who often sat in the stairwell just hang out. At first I didnt know she was bona fide schizo; we had some nice talks. But I must have disturbed her one day when we were in the kitchen together because suddenly she came at me with a big vegetable knife! The police came for her later; apparently this was not the first time.
