They were on their ships, sailing overnight, nervous, unable to - TopicsExpress

They were on their ships, sailing overnight, nervous, unable to sleep. Soon they would board their flimsy but adequate Higgins boats or landing crafts to move ashore. Machine gun fire hit the water near them, hit their boats, and hit them; yet they continued forward. As the front of their boat opened, they were totally exposed to the mercy of the gunners perched upon the cliffs. They watched their friends and comrades fall, forever gone. Still they moved forward into the ocean and advanced ashore as more of their friends and comrades fell beside them. By the end of the longest day they had secured the beachheads and a foothold in France. The allied forces, primarily British, with American support had dented Hitlers armor. Many brave young men paid the ultimate price, and their surviving comrades discovered courage. Their sacrifices on June 6, 1944 led to the end of the war in Europe less than a year later. May we never forget them or that day, and may God be forever with them.
