Theyre back... thousands of Velella velella (By the Wind Sailors) have washed ashore on Tofino beaches. A natural phenomenon (nope, not an alien invasion), these pelagic (open ocean) jellyfish-like creatures are at the mercy of wind and currents, and in the right combination of circumstances will wash ashore in the hundreds or hundreds of thousands! In a few days, the blue tissues will have rotted away and all that will be left are thousands of clear cellophane wrappers. My marine biology background doesnt often intersect with my new political career - but if you watch CBC News tonight at 6 pm, you might see me and another local face or two!
