Things for which Im thankful about my mom, Ginni Western, on her 70th birthday: As a writer, musician, dancer, creative cook and visual artist, she is one of the most incredibly creative people I have ever met. I especially appreciated her gifts of music, teaching me how to turn anything and everything into a song. It is always a blessing to praise the LORD with her. She taught me about giving and receiving grace. She was honest about her frailties and regularly practiced confession and repentance. She openly shared with others the compassion and forgiveness she had likewise received through Christ. She taught me how to love abundantly and sacrificially. She taught me how to care for friends, family and even strangers, talking to and praying for people God brought across her path from the grocery store to her neighborhood and beyond. She spent countless hours with me tirelessly and joyfully helping me prepare for things as mundane as a spelling bee. God has brought her through many trials, from a near fatal car accident as a newlywed to rib removal and many other challenges. She regularly gives Him the glory for His sustenance in and through all things. She showed me how to set wise boundaries and to avoid the “Wonder Woman” syndrome of taking on too many tasks or tasks that were better accomplished by someone else. (OK, I’m still working on this one.) God gave her a scripture song that has become a favorite household lullaby which often reminds us of some of God’s priceless truths: “The LORD your God, He is with you. He is mighty to save. The LORD your God, He is with you. He will quiet you with His love. He will rejoice over you! He will rejoice over you! If you could only hear His voice. If you could hear the LORD rejoice, rejoicing over you with singing.” (Zeph. 3:17) Mom, I love you! Thank you for sharing the joy!
