Things that happened July 9: 1775 - Braddock was defeated at the Battle of the Monogahela near present day Pittsburgh. George Washington emerged from the battle a hero, and years later stories of the defeat of British regulars by irregular forces using wilderness tactics helped convince Americans that they could defeat the British. 1776 - The Declaration of Independence was read aloud to the Continental Army for the first time. 1868 - The Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. 1947 - Army Nurse Florence Blanchfield was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and became the first female office in the Army to hold permanent rank.
