Think youve got the best-tasting chili in Alamance County? Find out at the Times-News 24th annual Chili Bowl Cook Off. Just bring a crock pot full of your best chili to Holly Hill Mall to be judged by local chili experts. Top three winners receive cash and prizes from Burlington Parks & Recreation. Pre-registration required. The cook off will be limited to the first 30 people who preregister online by Jan. 28th. ~ Contest Rules ~ •Arrive at center area of Holly Hill Mall no later than 10:45am Saturday, January 31. •Employees and families of the Times-News not eligible. • Entries must be received by 5 pm Wednesday, Jan. 28 •When you arrive, check in at the registration table where you will receive a number to identify your chili for judging. Judging will begin at 11am. The contest should conclude between noon and 12:30pm. •All chili must be prepared in advance and made from scratch by entrant’s own, original recipe. Chili can be prepared with or without beans. All will be judged together. There are no categories. •Participants must bring the following: Chili in insulated container such as a crock pot. Electricity will NOT be available. A serving spoon or ladle and paper towels for clean up. Your chili recipe written or typed on paper or a postcard with your name written ON THE BACK. Bring at least enough chili for seven bowls full. Three bowls will be served (one to each judge). The judges may want to re-taste your chili so enough for seven bowls should be plenty – bring more if you wish to share with audience members. •Each judge will score each entry on good flavor, consistency, blend of spices, aroma and color on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best. The entrant with the highest overall score will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, a “taste-off” will be held. •One recipe per participant will be judged. All decisions are final. In case of a tie, a “taste off” will be held. Prizes are: First place: $100, plus prizes from Burlington Recreation & Parks Second place: $50, plus prizes from Burlington Recreation & Parks Third place: $25, plus prizes Burlington Recreation & Parks Door prize drawings throughout the competition!
