Thinking a bit about the issue of mandatory reporting of abuse .. theres a part of me regrets that when I was a kid there were people who knew and said nothing .. at the same time, I suspect that in professions where there is an existing obligation to report, one result may be that children / victims are much less likely to discuss whats happening since they are understandably wary of the interventions which will inevitably follow. If everyone has a legal obligation to report, might we not actually make victims even more reluctant to talk to someone? The costs of admitting to being a victim, even when there is no question of formal investigation (e.g. when the perpertrator is dead) are very, very high as it is.
