Thinking back on the very different experiences working in IT in - TopicsExpress

Thinking back on the very different experiences working in IT in the past compared to now with regard to information about “how to do stuff”. It was a challenging time to track down resources and people who could help with problems, to the point now where I can directly ask the person on the other side of the world who works for company X that wrote that program, in real-time. It rocks. The generational challenge I think we face at the moment is the period of time it will take for “the novelty” to wear off. People will stop being so absorbed by the connectivity aspect itself and it will become a “just is” part of our lives. My personal observation about why it is just so different compared to previous major tech products (radio, TV, telephone) is that those technologies took decades to infiltrate peoples lives and so they had more time to adapt and get used to it as it spread. Many technologies now seemingly appear out of nowhere and are instantly available throughout the world within a year or two, followed by the next, and the next and the next. The time needed for the mindset of the world to adapt is being challenged by the sheer speed these changes happen. The interesting thing though is that the more recent generations who have grown up since birth with these rapid changes happening around them will see it as normal and will expect these changes to keep happening. Perhaps their challenge/danger is a shortened attention span as they are conditioned to stop paying attention to something knowing that the next version is imminent. I love being part of the “before and after” generation, and I look forward to my future where I will get to use the “in my day…” line at the start of every sentence.
