Thirteen years.. I was on vacation that week, sleeping in at my apartment in Latham, NY. Ive seen the footage so many times, I dont remember the exact time the call came in, but I think it was between the two plane impacts. It was my ex-wifes mother, calling to say wake up and turn on the TV. My one strongest lasting memory of that morning was seeing the first tower collapse, the agonizing seconds before the anchors realized it. Looking back on it, Im sure they were reading from their pages of notes of what had happened already that morning. It was only about 15 or so seconds, but it seemed like an hour. I called in to see if the station wanted me to come in and work. I was told not to worry about it.. national network was doing all the coverage. As it turned out, theyd stay on it non-stop for an entire week. If I remember correctly, the station lost just over a million dollars of income from lost commercials and programming. There was a while afterward when it felt like tragic stories were following me in my early career. I had only been working in Casper for a month when Matthew Shepard was killed (October 98), and Columbine happened less than a week after I started my job in Green Bay.
