Thirty three years ago, on Friday morning of 24th July, 1981, Indonesia and the whole Malay world lost a great Islamic figure, affectionately known at home as Buya Hamka @ Prof. Dr. Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah born 73 years earlier within the vicinity of the picturesque Lake Maninjau of Western Sumatra. He left the legacy of more than a hundred books comprising perhaps one of the earliest Islamic novels, history on Islam and the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w., works on Islamic Philosophy and Sufism. Its never easy to describe Buya Hamka, a man of warm personality, down to earth and had the charm to spiritually touch you even if you might have not met him personally but just through listening to his religious talks through the cassettes or reading his books. He left us his monumental Tafsir Al-Azhar. Until today his life, his books and overall achievements are still being studied and researched especially by post graduate students from many countries not only in Indonesia.
